Jesus Gomez saves ASU, hits 43-yard, game-winning field goal as time expires at Baylor

“I don’t think I watched it go through the uprights ’cause I knew it was in, so I just turned and started celebrating,” Gomez told reporters postgame. “At the end (of the day), I’ve done it my whole life so it’s just another kick for me.”
Gomez has been such an upgrade for ASU, as he has nearly matched the 2024 season total of made field goals (11-for-20) with his 9-for-10 start to this season, including 4-for-4 against Baylor.
ASU ran several plays inside the Baylor 30-yard line to set up Gomez from the middle of the field, and a timeout with two seconds left gave him all the time he needed to set it up. That final Sun Devil drive included nine rushes and one pass, helped by two key Baylor penalties.
After the game began as a defensive slog with a 10-10 halftime score, neither defense could get a stop in the fourth quarter. It gave the game a real “whoever has the ball last will win” feel.

Jordyn Tyson had his own big moment when he gave ASU a 24-17 lead after he leapt for a touchdown and scored the following two-point conversion when the Sun Devils trailed by one with 8:51 remaining.

The Baylor defense was covering Tyson better than any opposing defense had up to that point, holding him to just 21 yards on his first five catches. He finished with seven catches for 43 yards and the touchdown.
His scores were set up by a 61-yard gain from wide receiver Derek Eusebio, who had his first two receptions of the season (78 yards). He added 11 rushing yards on two jet sweeps.

The turnover came after Abney was a major standout in the Week 3 win over Texas State, earning the highest coverage grade for the week among all Power Four corners with at least 20 coverage snaps, per PFF.
Abney was tied with Javan Robinson to lead ASU with three interceptions in 2024.

Nice win.
Not really related, but: those Fox announcers were the absolute worst. It's like they'd never seen a football game before. And at one point called ASU "Arizona".
Tremendous game. On the edge of my seat in the 2nd half. We won, but I was surprised how tight the Baylor defense was. Their secondary kept our explosive offense in check. Dismal play in the red zone! I pleasantly surprised to see the new receiver for ASU, Derek Eusebio. He made a couple of critical plays in the 4th quarter. Game ball goes to Jesus Gomez. Four field goals made and we won by 3 points!
