Jordyn Tyson, Deion Sanders make amends after ASU-Colorado game

After handily defeating Colorado on Saturday 42-17, one would expect Arizona State receiver Jordyn Tyson to simply celebrate the win with his teammates in his first game back after missing three due to a hamstring injury.

That wasn’t the case, as Tyson took a detour to the Buffaloes locker room to apologize to coach Deion Sanders more than two years after transferring away from Colorado, which happened about five months after Sanders was hired.

Sanders said postgame that Tyson has no reason to say sorry, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t want his undeniable talent at CU.

“You don’t have to apologize to me, you’re young. I was making the same mistakes when I was your age,” Sanders said. “I’m just thankful that you got on the right course. He’s trying his best to walk with the Lord.

“Isn’t this what it’s all about? That moment. Even though we get our butts kicked, I’m sitting there going through the game in my head, and he walks in full uniform and says (I’m sorry).”

Tyson played in nine games as a true freshman for Colorado during the 2022 season, where his 21.4 yards per catch was fourth in FBS, but didn’t stick around when Sanders set the college world on fire the next year.

He has since only skyrocketed in the annals of college football as many NFL Draft experts’ top receiver should Tyson enter the 2026 proceedings.

Sanders said Tyson left Boulder because of “several different things,” and hopes that the wide out is a “top five pick, top 10 pick” because he’s got “it.”

The coach added that he hopes his own locker room can learn from Tyson’s posture and maturity.

“That moment, that’s (why) all us coaches coach for,” Sanders said.

The top ASU passing target had a quiet game on Saturday for his lofty standards, coming down with two catches for 61 yards. Tyson’s pair of receptions was his fewest this season by four, as he hauled in six in back-to-back games against Mississippi State and Texas State early on.

He was listed as “probable” for the Territorial Cup on Black Friday after being around 95% healthy in his first action back from injury.

ASU coach Kenny Dillingham told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta on Wednesday morning that he is “fired up” to see Tyson play against Arizona if he suits up, as his growth as a player and human has surpassed “what I could have ever imagined.”

In his lone Territorial Cup appearance that was cut short last season due to a collarbone injury, Tyson had eight receptions for 143 yards and a touchdown.
