Tyrann Mathieu helping youth through football camps

Jun 26, 2017, 10:02 AM | Updated: 12:20 pm

Arizona Cardinals DB Tyrann Mathieu hosted a youth football camp in his hometown of New Orleans on Sunday.

Mathieu worked with the campers, running routes and doing the drills alongside them in the hopes that his camp will help the kids continue to be constructive and keep on the right track.

“When I was growing up I played a lot of different sports,” he said. “Year-round I was always busy. I went from football to basketball to baseball.

“… I think it’s important for these kids to get in the right direction and just to play sports even if they don’t want to play professionally in the future. I think it’s important for them to be constructive.”

The former LSU star spoke to the youngsters prior to the drills regarding the life lessons they can take away from football, making it known he wishes camps like his will help New Orleans’ youth stay away from violence.

“I would say all killings are senseless most of them are avoidable,” Mathieu said. “I think New Orleans as a whole, we have a lot of work to do and I think it really starts with the youth just trying to inspire them and shift their direction.”
