Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Jake Arrieta was the story of Monday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Through eight innings, Arrieta dominated, allowing three hits and two walks in eight innings of shutout baseball for a 2-0 lead heading into the ninth.
With his pitch count at 110, Arrieta was pulled for closer Seranthony Dominguez. From there, the story would no longer be about him.
The D-backs had Paul Goldschmidt leading off, but Arizona’s first baseman didn’t start the rally, grounding out to second.
David Peralta, however, did start it and cut the deficit in half with one swing. The lefty hit a solo homer off Dominguez, his career-high 18th of the season.

Dominguez came off as unsettled in the next at-bat, throwing three straight balls to third baseman Eduardo Escobar.
Escobar took the next two pitches for strikes before a bloop hit down the left field line turned into a double.
Steven Souza Jr. was up next, and his red-hot hitting continued, as he knocked a single up the middle to score Escobar and tie the game.

Just like that, Arrieta’s dominance was for nothing.
Unfortunately for the D-backs, they couldn’t take advantage of a chance to win the game.
Daniel Descalso struck out, and while Nick Ahmed and Alex Avila were walked back-to-back to load the bases with two outs, pinch-hitter A.J. Pollock grounded out to send the game to extra innings.
The D-backs went on to leave runners in scoring position the next four innings before Peralta hit another solo home run in the bottom of the 14th for a walk-off win.
