The Arizona Diamondbacks had to do some unfortunate shuffling to their lineup Sunday afternoon.

Second baseman Wilmer Flores exited the game after being hit in the foot by a pitch.

In the second inning, Flores was up to bat against San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz. After fouling off back-to-back pitches, Flores took a knuckle curve on the foot. He took his base and stayed in the game.

He wouldn’t stay in for long, however, as he was pulled in the fourth inning.

The injury was diagnosed as a right foot contusion, per the D-backs. Following the game, D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said the X-rays were negative and the second baseman should be good to go for Monday.

To make up for Flores’ absence, the D-backs moved Ketel Marte to second base. Filling Marte’s spot in center field is Jarrod Dyson.

It’s a tough blow for the D-backs as Flores has provided a sixth-man type of performance for Arizona this season.

After struggling in his first 10 games of the season, posting a .182 batting average with six hits and four runs scored, Flores has picked it up. In the 31 games following that stretch, the infielder is batting .316 with 30 hits (seven doubles), two home runs and 14 RBI. He’s also scored nine runs.

Flores has also shown discipline at the plate, recording just 14 strikeouts this season. He leads all D-backs hitters with at least 40 games played. The next closest is Adam Jones with 27.

The D-backs couldn’t take home the win Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2 to the Giants in extra innings.
