Paul Goldschmidt homers off Zack Greinke to the upper deck

Jul 14, 2019, 12:47 PM

It took three games for Paul Goldschmidt to get his first hit against his former team, then he got another.

Goldschmidt racked up two hits in his first two at-bats for the St. Louis Cardinals off Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zack Greinke on Sunday, the second of which went 416 feet for a two-run home run.

The former D-backs first baseman had a poor history against Greinke coming into the game with just four hits in 23 at-bats, including 12 strikeouts while Greinke was a pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Goldschmidt was traded to the Cardinals in December and has mostly struggled this season.

The home run off Greinke was just Goldschmidt’s 17th on the season. A career .294 hitter, Goldschmidt is batting just .253 in 2019 with 39 RBI. His .429 slugging percentage and .769 OPS are on pace to be career-worst numbers for the first baseman.

Goldschmidt was 0-for-7 in the first two games of the series against Arizona. It was his first time facing his old team.

The home run left Greinke charged with four earned runs through three innings. Greinke has only allowed four or more earned runs four times this season in 19 starts.
