Quarterback Chad Kanoff signed with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday after being cut when the Arizona Cardinals trimmed their roster down to the NFL’s 53-man limit.

Kanoff will be one of four quarterbacks under contract with Detroit and is likely headed to the practice squad, but he may have more value than the two players between him and starter Matthew Stafford on the depth chart heading into Week 1.

Spending the full offseason learning first-year head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s offense, and last season with many of the Cardinals current personnel, gives the Princeton grad a deeper insight into the mysterious Cardinals’ offense than most.

Just how much can Kanoff reveal about the Cardinals’ new-look offense?

“Pretty much everything,” Kingsbury joked with the Detroit media in a conference call. “Whatever he says is exactly what we’re going to run in the game.”

Kingsbury doesn’t believe that the slow unveil of his offense throughout preseason has been as important as people have made it out to be.

“They’ve had all summer to tweak and change, and we’ve had the same. I think that’s been overblown a little bit, but it’s all part of the gamesmanship,” Kingsbury said.

Cardinals center A.Q. Shipley didn’t seem too concerned about the information Kanoff could provide his new team.

“We’ll see how smart Chad is, I don’t know,” Shipley said. “It’s a bold strategy move on everybody’s part where they can try to get somebody in the first couple of weeks where they can get some intel.”
