The Northern Arizona men’s basketball team has been ranked No. 8 in the preseason Big Sky Coaches’ and Media Polls.

The program received 35 points in the Coaches’ Poll and 150 points from the media.

NAU’s rankings this preseason are a step up from last year when they were ranked last in the preseason Coaches’ Poll with 10 points and last in the Media Poll with 46 points.

Shane Burcar, formerly the Lumberjacks’ assistant coach, takes over the head coaching job this season with five returning starters and seven letter winners from last season.

Returning players include Bernie Andre who won the Big Sky Newcomer of the Year and led the ‘Jacks in scoring and rebounding last season, and junior Luke Avdalovic who was fifth nationally in three-point percentage.

Eastern Washington was given the top spot in the Coaches’ Poll with 96 points while Montana got the top spot in the Media Poll with 354 points.

The Lumberjacks open their season on the road in Tucson against the Arizona Wildcats on Nov. 6.
