Rainy weather grounds the Air Raid for Arizona Cardinals in win

Oct 20, 2019, 6:22 PM | Updated: 9:03 pm

The Arizona Cardinals offense thrives off its Air Raid style offense. With the constant rain at MetLife Stadium, the Cardinals relied heavily on their ground game to beat the New York Giants 27-21 on Sunday.

“We’re a precision passing team and that was kind of out the window. I think both teams struggled with that a little bit but we somehow found a way,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters after the game.

If you had told this team in August it win a game with most of the offense on the ground, it might’ve laughed and the Cardinals probably wouldn’t believe it.

Kyler Murray completed 14-of-21 passes for 104 yards and only attempted four throws in the second half. The team relied heavily on running back Chase Edmonds, who notched 126 rushing yards on 27 carries for three touchdowns.

Murray said the biggest thing was to just take care of the football when the weather gets that bad.

“It was frustrating, but it is what it is,” Murray told reporters after the game. “At that point, when it starts raining like that you have to do whatever it takes to win and that’s what we did.”

Kingsbury said for a rookie quarterback like Murray, picking up a win on the road in bad weather was huge.

“I thought it was awesome. He protected the football and that won us the game,” Kingsbury said. “It was hard to throw it like I said, so there wasn’t a ton of that going on but he protected it well, led the team well, got us into some good checks and won the game.”

Even with the win, Kingsbury told 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Paul Calvisi after the win that he’s glad they play indoors.

“I don’t think it’s ever happened in my career, and I hope it never happens again. I’m glad we play in a dome,” Kingsbury said.
