10 people Arizona sports fans must follow on Twitter

Jul 18, 2011, 6:55 PM | Updated: 8:59 pm

With Twitter celebrating it’s fifth anniversary last week and a plethora of national websites giving readers their must follows on the social media service, we here at ArizonaSports.com thought it was time to give you the top ten people you should follow in terms of Valley sports.

We’ll be honest, this is a subjective list that includes the names we enjoy reading 140 characters from on a regular basis. Some may provide nothing more than humorous views, others may be athletes and who knows, we may even add in a few that inform you with news and interesting tidbits.

Rank Player Reason
#10 @EspoAZ/@Burns620 Yeah sure, maybe we’re risking a dislocated shoulder by patting ourselves on the back like this, but Dave Burns and Greg Esposito both provide a unique and humorous view on what’s going on in local and national sports. They’re the @SportsGuy33 and @JimmyTraina — at least that’s how we’re going to sell them to you — of local sports minus the millions of dollars, hundreds-of-thousands of readers and probably some of the talent.
Rank Player Reason
#9 @WalshTodd You enjoy his work as the sideline reporter on Arizona Diamondbacks telecasts but Todd Walsh is even better on Twitter. Between his music references and great local sports insight, he provides exactly what you’re looking for on Twitter.
Rank Player Reason
#8 @MFitzgerald He may only be the brother of an NFL superstar but Marcus Fitzgerald is capable of making news on his own. While his day-to-day tweets may not move the meter for the local fan, during Cardinals games you never know what he might say. With free agency on the horizon and a quarterback on the to-do list following Marcus is a must.
Rank Player Reason
#7 @LarryFitzgerald You can’t put Marcus Fitzgerald on the list without including the reason why he’s famous on it too. Larry Fitzgerald may not say anything controversial or outrageous on Twitter but he interacts with his fans. Oh, and did we mention he took a few of his followers to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl too?
Rank Player Reason
#6 @JayFeely Who says NFL kickers can’t be interesting? Whether he’s talking about his profession or about his passion for golf, politics and fishing, Jay Feely provides an unique insight into the mind of a very intelligent professional athlete. That and he likes to argue with ESPN’s Skip Bayless so you have to like him for that.
Rank Player Reason
#5 @JaredDudley619 If you’re looking for a local athlete who has truly embraced Twitter and made a name for himself while using it, look no further than Suns forward Jared Dudley. He not only gives his unique perspective and thoughts, but also shares great Twivid from the locker room and the road.
Rank Player Reason
#4 @PaulCoro/@KentSomers These two guys are more dialed in than a telephone operator. If you’re looking for insight on the Suns or Cardinals from guys who spend most of their time with the team’s Paul Coro and Kent Somers are your guys.
Rank Player Reason
#3 @DarnellDockett You can file this follow under ‘for mature audiences only’. As long as you’re of age, Dockett’s antics and rants are quite entertaining. Whether it’s live tweeting a traffic stop or sending out pictures of his new pet alligator, you’ll get your money’s worth in every 140 characters. Just try to avoid any invitations to watch him on UStream.
Rank Player Reason
#2 @SteveNash He may be serious on the court but online Steve Nash is anything but. Via Twitter he not only interacts with fans but it is also where you can find all of his hilarious viral videos and interesting Twitpics. If you’re not already following him — and we find that hard to believe seeing as he already has over a half-a-million hanging on his every tweet — you should start immediately.
Rank Player Reason
#1 @CardsChatter Darren Urban has spent the better part of his career covering the Arizona Cardinals and it shows on Twitter. Now as a member of the team’s official website he provides the kind of in-depth coverage only someone who works at the team facility provides. While his tweets are informative, they’re also entertaining as his biting personality makes him a must follow for any sports fan in Arizona.
