The Arizona Diamondbacks revealed Monday the 60-player pool that will start off spring training 2.0 on July 3.

Among those players selected were a number of Diamondbacks prospects, including Bryce Jarvis, the first-round pick the D-backs took earlier this month. Nine of the D-backs’ top 10 prospects as ranked by MLB Pipeline made the 60-man roster, with the exception being top prospect Kristian Robinson, who is 19 years old.

Of those nine top-10 prospects to make the 60-player pool, one of them, right-hander Corbin Martin, made the 40-man roster.

One of the players omitted from the group of 60 was Yasmany Tomas, the once-highly-touted slugger out of Cuba who in the last few years has been all but forgotten by the D-backs, left in the minor leagues despite once hitting 31 dingers with an .820 OPS in the majors. Now, even with expanded active rosters to start the season and the introduction of a DH in the National League, Tomas still didn’t get a shot.

“The one thing with the 60 is I would imagine there’s going to be a lot of maneuverability as we go through the season,” general manager Mike Hazen said. “So there are going to be changes made to our roster that we will have the flexibility to do. And I am unsure, again, because I’m not sitting here saying that this 60-man roster — there were a lot of challenging pieces to put together the 60-man roster. Where is our depth? What positions are we covered in? How much pitching do we have? What positions are we thinner or deeper at? Those were a lot of the factors.

“There will be maneuverability. So I’m not going to get to that answer. I’m sure Yas is frustrated with this decision as I would imagine any competitor would be.”

When asked, Hazen agreed that Kevin Cron, who did make the 60-player pool, was a similar player to Tomas.

James Sherfy, who has a career 2.98 ERA in 43 major league games, was not included on the 40-man roster but was included in the 60-player pool. Similarly, Jon Jay, a veteran outfielder with 10 years in MLB was not on the 40-man but is in the 60-player pool. Meanwhile, Andy Young and Wyatt Mathisen, who have never played major league games, were on the 40-man. The same is true for pitcher Riley Smith.
