Third overall pick not a sure thing

The Arizona Diamondbacks currently hold both the third and seventh overall picks in Monday’s MLB draft.

While two top ten picks is certainly something to be excited about, history shows that the No. 3 pick often turns into a bust.

Eric Munson, Dewon Brazelton, David McCarthy, B.J. Wallace and Chris Gruler are all players that the average fan has never heard of. They are also all former number three draft picks.

The top two picks in the draft, more talented than the third, seem to pan out at a much higher percentage.

It is unclear as to why there is such a drop off in talent at the No. 3 overall pick, but history states that the pick tends to be a trap.

Diamondback fans should certainly be excited about the potential of drafting two top-ten prospects, but they should also be wary about wasting the pick.

Monday, Arizona will select two players early in the first round, but the draft is not about now, it is about the future.

Hopefully the two prospects selected will be in the Majors and contributing a few years from now, rather than on a list with Munson, Brazelton, McCarthy, Wallace and Gruler.
