The Arizona Coyotes announced on Friday that Steve Potvin will be the new head coach of the Tucson Roadrunners.

The move comes after former Roadrunners head coach Jay Varady joined the Coyotes coaching staff on Jan. 14.

“It’s an honor to be named head coach of the Roadrunners,” Potvin said in a press release. “We have a great group of players in Tucson and I’m looking forward to developing our prospects while building upon the winning foundation that we’ve established.”

Potvin is no stranger to Tucson, as he has served as a Roadrunners assistant coach since 2017.

In that time, he helped Varady and former head coach Mike Van Ryn to a 112-65-16 overall record and two division championships.

Before joining the coaching staff in Tucson, Potvin spent one season with the Coyotes in 2016-17 as a skills coach where he focused on individual skill improvement and player assessment with both NHL and AHL players.

“We are very pleased to select Steve as the new head coach of the Roadrunners,” Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong said in the release.

“Steve is a very good coach who has done an excellent job working with our prospects in Tucson the past three years. We are confident that he is the right coach to continue the development of our players and help build a winning culture in Tucson.”

Prior to his coaching days, Potvin played professionally for 16 years.

The former forward went 31-44-75 in 158 career games in the AHL to go along with 133 goals and 184 assists in 350 games over 10 seasons in Europe.
