The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled outfielder Nick Heath from the Triple-A Reno Aces on Wednesday morning.
Additionally, the team designated pitcher Stefan Crichton for assignment.
Heath is averaging .161 and is sporting a .451 OPS over 13 games played this season. He’s recorded five hits, one RBI and four walks, while striking out 11 times.
The outfielder last played May 16 in a 3-0 loss to the Washington Nationals.
“Nick’s gonna obviously get some opportunities, gets a couple at-bats. He’s a good player, he’s a good baseball player and he’s helped us win some baseball games earlier this year.
“Anytime you get a young player up here to help you win some baseball games you’ve got to be excited about that. I’m not sure what type of rotation will be there yet.”
Crichton posted a 6.04 ERA and a 1.836 WHIP over 29 games (22.1 innings pitched). He notched four saves and struck out 15, while walking 12.
In the team’s loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night, Crichton allowed two earned runs off of two hits and two walks.
“It was a hard decision. He’s been here for a couple years now and we were all so proud of what he had done and how he established himself as a major league pitcher,” Lovullo said. “Things were just not going in a very positive direction for him. He was having trouble commanding the baseball, velocity was down, mechanics were not synced up.
“It was hard to get into that rhythm in the major leagues. Had we had the opportunity to, we would have sent him down to the minor leagues, but unfortunately with his situation, he’s out of options. We’d certainly love to keep him in the organization, but he’s got to get passed around to the other 29 teams first and we understand those ground rules.”
The D-backs will look to get back into the win column when they take on the Brewers.
