Free agent point guard Elfrid Payton has agreed to a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Basketball News’ Evan Sidery reported on Thursday the two sides were working toward a deal.
Payton spent last season with the New York Knicks. While the 27-year-old point guard started 63 games for a playoff team, he had an inconsistent year, averaging 10.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.
The No. 10 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Payton played for the Suns in the 2017-18 season, acquired before the trade deadline for a 2018 second-round pick to fill the void left by the traded Eric Bledsoe.
Payton then played for one season with the New Orleans Pelicans before signing a two-year, $16 million deal with the Knicks.
The Suns will have Payton slot in behind Chris Paul and Cam Payne in the point guard rotation, giving them a floor general with hundreds of starts to his name to fill in as needed in a third-string position.
