Arizona Coyotes reveal Tempe arena proposal renderings

Sep 20, 2021, 1:47 PM

The Arizona Coyotes on Monday released renderings of their proposed arena entertainment district in Tempe.

The images lend more insight into the team’s bid submitted on Sept. 2 to build a mixed-use project on 46 acres of land south of the Salt River and located near the intersection of Rio Salado Parkway and Priest Drive.

According to the Arizona Republic, the proposal for the $1.7 billion development in Tempe calls for private funding along with a portion of finding coming from city tax revenues to pay for $200 million on top of that.

The project would include the arena, hotels, apartment and storefront retail spaces.

The city in the statement on Sept. 2 said the evaluation process will take many months and include extensive examinations.

The conclusion of the process would ultimately result in a public meeting and a vote to accept or reject an agreement with the team.

“We are pleased to have submitted a proposal to the City of Tempe,” a team spokesperson said on Sept. 2. “As regulations surrounding the (request for proposal) process dictate, we cannot comment any further at this time, but we remain incredibly excited about this extraordinary opportunity.”

The city of Glendale announced in August that it would not renew its operating agreement with the Coyotes at their current home of Gila River Arena after many years of quarrels. That means the NHL team will play its last season at the Glendale Arena in 2021-22.

The Coyotes remain in search of a temporary home and said there is not yet a timeline on when an announcement revealing a temporary home would be made.

Prior to moving to Gila River Arena, the team shared a home with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns in downtown Phoenix at what was known then as America West Arena.
