D-backs blow four-run lead, as Arenado powers Rockies to win: By The Numbers

In Friday afternoon’s 12-2 shellacking of the Arizona Diamondbacks, it was outfielder Charlie Blackmon who took center stage, going a perfect for 6-for-6 at the plate.

Twenty-four hours later, Blackmon was more than happy to temporary cede the limelight, as teammate Nolan Arenado took his turn battering D-backs’ pitching.

Arenado blasted two home runs and added an RBI double and the Rockies erased a four-run deficit with nine straight runs in a 9-4 rout of the D-backs.

Here’s a look back at the five-run defeat by the numbers:

1:

For the first time all season, the D-backs scored the game’s first run. Martin Prado, who left Friday’s loss with a lacerated finger, returned to the lineup and laced an RBI double off of Jorge de la Rosa in the top of the first inning.

1-7:

With the loss, Arizona dropped to 1-7 on the year — setting a new franchise-low record through the first eight games of a season. The previous mark of 2-6 was set by the 1998 and 2004 squads.

3:

Shortstop Chris Owings recorded his third stolen base of 2014. In 20 games after his September call-up a season ago, Owings had only one steal.

4:

Mark Trumbo smacked his National League-leading fourth home run of the campaign in the third inning. Trumbo has hit three home runs in as many days and is tied with Giancarlo Stanton for the league lead in RBI (11).

5 Part I:

Arenado became the fifth player to record at least three RBI against the D-backs in 2014, joining Scott Van Slyke, Brandon Belt, Angel Pagan and Blackmon.

5 Part II:

Saturday’s starter, right-hander Brandon McCarthy, gave up five or more runs for the second consecutive outings. Colorado scored six runs off McCarthy on seven hits.

In 2013, McCarthy only gave up five or more runs five times.

6.75:

Through the first week-plus of the season, Arizona pitchers are allowing 6.75 runs per contest. In the last three games, teams have combined to score 29 runs.

19:

The D-backs’ bullpen has allowed 19 runs after the seventh inning or later in 2014. Saturday night, Ryan Rowland-Smith and Will Harris combined to give up three.

26:

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt’s 26-game hit streak, the second-longest in franchise history, came to an end Saturday. Goldschmidt finished 0-for-2 at the plate with two walks.
