D-backs use three home runs, youth to come back and beat Brewers: By The Numbers

Josh Collmenter has made three career starts against the Milwaukee Brewers and he has basically owned them every outing, allowing exactly three hits in each.

On Tuesday, the Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander gave up four hits — and five runs (one earned) — in the opening frame.

His offense, however, was unfazed by the deficit, chipping away at the Brewers’ 5-2 lead before ultimately using a three-run eighth inning to top them, 7-5.

What’s more? The Brewers had as many hits in innings 2-9 as they tallied in the first — four. And they didn’t get past second base after the first inning either.

The Diamondbacks’ pitching efforts were perhaps highlighted by rookie Evan Marshall, who was called up from Triple-A Reno earlier in the day. The hard-throwing right-hander ended up with the win after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings — spread between the sixth and seventh innings of the game — with the help of two strikeouts.

Here’s a look back at the win by the numbers:

.342

Paul Goldschmidt raised his batting average to .342 on Tuesday, thanks to a 3-for-5 night at the plate which included a home run, a pair of RBI and runs scored and a double. He was a triple shy of the cycle and he now has a .939 on-base-plus-slugging percentage on the year.

Recently-announced NL Rookie of the Month, Chris Owings, hit his first career major league home run Tuesday with a sixth inning solo shot to leftfield.

The Diamondbacks’ three home runs — from Goldschmidt, Owings and Aaron Hill — were a season-high for a game this season.

16

The Diamondbacks’ seven runs scored on Tuesday tied for the second most they’ve scored in a single game all season. In their highest-scoring game, on March 31 when they scored eight runs in their Chase Field opener against the San Francisco Giants, they lost 9-8.

16

Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero has reached base safely in 16 of his last 17 games. On Tuesday, he was 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Since April 17, Montero is hitting .321 with a .458 on-base percentage and 11 RBI.

18

Marshall has allowed just one earned run in 18 innings pitched between the Triple-A and major league levels this season, good for a 0.50 ERA. On Tuesday, in his major league debut, the right-hander was practically perfect by not allowing a baserunner and getting four outs with 19 pitches — 15 strikes. Marshall topped out at 95 mph with his fastball Tuesday, throwing seven four-seamers with such a velocity. He became the third Diamondbacks relief pitcher to earn a win in his major league debut with the outing.
