Padres walk off on D-backs: By The Numbers

...

Wade Miley was cruising. His Arizona Diamondbacks handed him a one-run lead in the fourth. And, in the 5th, the San Diego Padres tied it back up, 1-1.

But he didn’t let up, with a 13-pitch seventh inning. But it would be the final frame of the game for him, despite a pitch count of just 85 when he exited.

Trouble was, Odrisamer Despaigne was better for the Padres, allowing just four hits over seven innings.

The game’s best action was really had on the mound, by those two.

Miley did allow nine baserunners, but fanned five and did well to strand runs throughout the outing.

Despaigne struck out four and only allowed four hits, and no walks, in a 109-pitch effort over seven innings.

Then Evan Marshall struggled in the eighth, who saw men on first and third with no outs in the frame. But he managed to get out of it with three strikeouts.

Then, in the second game of his career, pinch-hitter Cory Spangenberg knocked a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth with Brad Ziegler on the mound.

Here’s a look at Tuesday’s loss by the numbers:

2

With Tuesday’s loss, the best the D-backs can do in San Diego is split the series with the Padres. Manager Kirk Gibson’s squad has won just two of its last seven series.

5

Miley has tossed five consecutive quality starts for the D-backs, though failing to get a win in that stretch, with an average run support of just 1.2. The left-hander has compiled a 2.20 ERA in that span, tossing 100 pitches or more in four of the five outings.

7

Tuesday’s loss was the seventh walk-off loss suffered by the D-backs in their last 27 games.

10.4

D-backs rookie relief pitcher Evan Marshall is striking out opposing batters at a rate of 10.4 per nine innings. On Tuesday, he struck out the side in the eighth inning.

15

Ziegler has seen his ERA ballon from 2.18 on July 8 to 3.55 following Tuesday’s loss, having given up 15 earned runs in his last 20.2 innings of work.

Since July 8, Ziegler has pitched to a 6.53 ERA in that span, recording five blown saves and two losses over the 20-game span.
