Twins jump on Chafin early, top Arizona Diamondbacks: By The Numbers

...

Two of Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Andrew Chafin’s first three Major League starts have come on the road against American League teams.

The left-hander’s second outing against an AL club didn’t go quite as smoothly as his first.

Chafin, who pitched five shutout innings in his first career MLB start at the Cleveland Indians on Aug. 13, was shelled for four earned runs on seven hits in three innings of work in the D-backs’ 6-3 loss at the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.

Chafin (0-1) did strike out a career-high five batters in the loss, but he gave up more hits to the Twins than in his first two combined starts (six) against the Indians and his Sept. 17 outing against the San Francisco Giants, when he allowed just two earned runs in six innings.

The D-backs did their best to put together a two-out rally in the ninth inning — Tuffy Gosewisch reached base on an error and Ender Inciarte notched his fourth base hit of the night to bring the tying run to the plate — but Jared Burton caused A.J. Pollock to ground out to end the game.

Here’s how the D-backs lost for the sixth time in seven games, by the numbers:

.368

The D-backs are 7-12 (a .368 winning percentage) against the American League. While Arizona has the MLB’s worst record, there are actually four NL teams with poorer records against the AL, led by the Reds, who are 6-14.

After allowing 15 earned runs in 16 innings pitched in his previous three starts, Twins RHP Kyle Gibson (13-11) allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work Tuesday to improve his ERA to 4.50.

2.22

Chafin’s ERA rose 2.22 points (from 1.64 to 3.86) on the season after Tuesday’s loss.

3

Mark Trumbo struck out three times for the second consecutive game. Trumbo did get his 56th RBI of the season on an eighth-inning groundout that drove in Inciarte.

8

Gibson’s eight strikeouts on Tuesday tied a season high; he struck out eight Boston Red Sox batters in a 2-1 loss on June 18.

12

With Tuesday’s four-hit performance, Inciarte improved his hitting streak to 12 games.

41

The Diamondbacks have given up 41 runs in their last five losses, surrendering at least five runs in each game.
