The Arizona Coyotes hired John Madden as an assistant coach on Tuesday, as first reported by Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Madden joins Andre Tourigny’s coaching staff after spending the last two seasons with the San Jose Sharks as an assistant.

“John is an experienced coach and a three-time Stanley Cup champion,” Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong said in a release. “He’s a proven winner who had a very good NHL career as a defensive specialist. I’m confident that he will be able to help our penalty-killing unit and he will be a great addition to our staff.”

After retiring from the NHL in 2012 following a 13-year career that spanned four organizations, Madden joined the Montreal Canadiens’ amateur recruiting department.

Madden stayed in that role for a year before he was hired as an assistant coach by the Florida Panthers. He would stay in that role until he was fired in 2016.

Following his Florida tenure, Madden was named head coach of the Cleveland Monsters, the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. In his three seasons at the helm, Madden posted a 101–99–4–4 record before the two sides parted ways in 2019.

As a player, Madden spent the majority of his career with the New Jersey Devils. In 13 NHL seasons (898 games), Madden recorded 348 points (165 goals and 183 assists).

He won three Stanley Cups over that time, two with the Devils (2000, 2003) and one with the Chicago Blackhawks (2010). Madden also took home the Frank J. Selke Trophy for his defensive efforts in 2001.

“It’s exciting to have the privilege to work alongside a proven winner like John,” Tourigny said in a release. “His resume as a coach and as a player is extensive. Our staff, our players and I will take full advantage of his knowledge and experience.”
