Coyotes prospect Logan Cooley impresses for Team USA at World Juniors

Arizona Coyotes prospect Logan Cooley is one of two players representing the team during the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, and the No. 3 overall pick had an impressive showing Saturday.

Cooley is skating for Team USA, who routed Austria in the tournament prelims 7-0T

The Pittsburgh native showed flashes of why he was a highly-touted prospect and why the Coyotes had their eyes on him, registering an assist.

With the U.S. leading 1-0, Cooley set up teammate Matt Coronato with a slick cross-ice pass to make things 2-0.

Cooley didn’t score in Saturday’s win but created quite the buzz with a goal that he nearly scored.

The forward attempted the lacrosse-style “Michigan” goal, a highlight reel goal that few would even attempt.

Had Cooley pulled it off, however, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s done so in competition, scoring a Michigan against Latvia while playing for the U.S. Developmental Team.

While just the one point, Cooley made his impact felt offensively with five shots on goal. He had an ice time of 17:08 which was the fourth-most of any U.S. skater.

Cooley also flashed his hands with a cheeky move to navigate his way through two Austria defenders to set his teammate up for a shot at the net.

Team USA is back in action Sunday to wrap up the prelims of World Juniors against Sweden with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
