The Arizona Diamondbacks placed second baseman Ketel Marte on the injured list on Friday, the team announced.
In a corresponding move, the D-backs recalled infielder Buddy Kennedy from Triple-A Reno.
The team did not specify an injury designation for Marte, who was slated to play 2B and bat fifth in Friday night’s matchup against the Giants in San Francisco.
Arizona third baseman Emmanuel Rivera will replace Marte in the lineup and bat sixth, while infielder Josh Rojas slides over from 3B to 2B and jumps up one slot in the order from the No. 6 hole to the No. 5 spot.
The soon-to-be 29-year-old Marte dealt with a hamstring issue over the course of the season that saw manager Torey Lovullo deploy him as a designated hitter while nursing the ailment.
And with only six games remaining on the docket for the Diamondbacks this year, the move to the IL means that Marte’s 2022 campaign has come to an end.
The switch hitter finished this season slashing .240/.321/.407 (.728 OPS) with 42 doubles, two triples and 12 home runs. Marte also added 52 RBIs, 55 walks and five stolen bases in 137 games played.
Kennedy made his MLB debut this season after getting called up on June 17. However, the soon-to-be 24-year-old rookie was optioned back to Reno on Aug. 5 after slashing .225/.289./.338 (.627 OPS) with two doubles, two triples, one home run and 12 RBIs over 80 at-bats (29 appearances).
The D-backs open up a three-game series with the Giants at 7:10 p.m. on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
Arizona (72-84) right-hander Merrill Kelly (13-7, 3.13 ERA) is set to start against San Francisco (78-78) righty Alex Cobb (6-7, 3.67 ERA).
