After suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of the Atlanta Braves Friday night at Turner Field, the Arizona Diamondbacks responded like they have so many times this season, earning an 8-4 victory over the Bravos Saturday night.
Thanks to 6.2 scoreless innings from Arizona starter Patrick Corbin, who surrendered only three hits while striking eight batters, the D-backs evened their current three-game series versus Atlanta and are once again a win away from reaching .500.
A two-run inning in the fourth and a three-run inning in the fifth were respectively highlighted a David Peralta solo home run (his 12th of year) and back-to-back sacrifice flies by Peralta and second baseman Aaron Hill, giving the D-backs a 6-0 advantage that lasted until the eighth inning.
In the eighth, the Braves recorded four runs, inducing some sweaty palms and nervous nail-biting from D-backs faithful. Those apprehensive feelings would be fleeting, however, as a two-run single courtesy of D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in the ninth gave Arizona the insurance runs they needed before reliever Brad Ziegler helped slam the door later in the inning.
Below, we take a look at the D-backs’ victory, by the numbers.
16.2
Corbin displayed tremendous control and velocity in his eighth start of the season, scattering three hits and striking out eight over 6.2 scoreless innings of action. In his last three starts versus the Braves, Corbin has pitched 16.2 innings of shutout ball.
2.81
Corbin’s ERA over his last six starts (10 ER in 32 IP). After earning the win Saturday, Corbin is 2-2 with 35 strikeouts over that span.
.516
It’s been well documented in this space and others, but Peralta has been absolutely sizzling at the plate for nearly the past two months. However, he has taken his sparkling play to another level over the past couple weeks. Following his 2-for-3 performance with one home run and three RBI versus Atlanta Saturday, Peralta is now batting .516 (16-for-31) over his last nine games.
7
Lamb’s RBI double in the fifth inning gave the D-backs third baseman his seventh extra-base hit in his last 13 games. In those 13 games, Lamb is batting .313 (15-for-48) with five runs scored.
8
D-backs center fielder A.J. Pollock extended his current hitting streak to eight games after going 2-for-4 with three runs scored to help Arizona earn their 13th win in their last 19 games.
3.00
The ERA of the D-backs’ bullpen over the last six games. Entering the day, Arizona relievers had boasted a 1.15 ERA over the last five games, but the four combined earned runs ceded by Keith Hessler and Daniel Hudson Saturday allowed the unit’s ERA to balloon by more than double.
