D-backs acquire INF/OF Diego Castillo from Pirates for minor league prospect

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired infielder/outfielder Diego Castillo from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league RHP prospect Scott Randall, the team announced on Friday.

RHP Taylor Widener has been designated for assignment as a corresponding move.

Castillo made his major league debut in 2022, slashing .206/.251/.382 in 96 games with 11 home runs, 29 RBIs and 14 walks. He also had a .788 OPS against lefties in 153 plate appearances.

He played seven different positions last season with 60 of his 96 games being played in the middle infield.

Randall went 6-7 with a 3.82 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 108.1 innings and 21 games played for the Florida Complex League Pirates in 2022.

The D-backs have been involved in many trade rumors since the season ended but have not pulled off any meter-moving trades.

During the MLB’s winter meetings this offseason, the team has reportedly been lofting outfielders Alek Thomas and Daulton Varsho’s names quite a bit, but remains on course with allegedly having steep asking prices for the two.

Arizona has a surplus of young, talented outfields that includes Varsho (26 years old), Thomas (22), Corbin Carroll (22) and Jake McCarthy (25). The youngsters all offered a refreshing breath of speed, athleticism, power and defense, shining in their own unique ways.

The biggest problem was finding consistent playing time, part of the necessary steps for the development of a young potential star, for all four of them.
