Arizona Coyotes shut out by winless Carolina Hurricanes: By the Numbers

The Arizona Coyotes may have hit rock bottom.

That is a tough thing to say 10 games into the season, but when an already struggling team loses to the only winless team in the NHL, the question must be asked.

The Coyotes fell to the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 on Saturday, dropping their record to 3-6-1. The Coyotes sit in last place in the Pacific Division and Western Conference, and they have the third-worst record in the NHL.

Arizona started slow, fell behind early and was unable to catch up. Turnovers and an inability to clear the crease in front of their goaltender allowed the Hurricanes to get high quality scoring chances.

Once the Coyotes fell behind, they were unable to generate the sustained offensive pressure needed to get back into the game.

Mike Smith stopped 32-of-35 shots in one of his better performances of the season. However, his turnover in the second period directly led to Carolina’s third goal.

The Coyotes have nowhere to go but up. Here’s a look at Saturday’s loss by the numbers:

The Coyotes are winless through the first three games of their four-game road trip. Their last win came last Saturday, a 2-1 overtime win over the Florida Panthers. Arizona has lost six of its last seven games.

Number of wins the Carolina Hurricanes had coming into Saturday’s game. Forward Elias Lindholm led the way for the Hurricanes, scoring a pair of goals and sending the home crowd home happy.

The Coyotes have lost seven of their first 10 games this season (six in regulation, one in a shootout). Last season, they did not earn their seventh loss until game No. 20.

The Coyotes allowed the first goal of the game for the eighth time in 10 games this season.
