Coyotes struggle for second time against Calgary: By the Numbers

Devan Dubnyk may as well have been on “Hoarders” in the first period with the way he saved everything.

The only problem is he can’t also score.

The Arizona Coyotes lost a close one to the Calgary Flames despite strong play from Dubnyk in goal.

After an early penalty, Calgary had a four-minute power play in which they peppered Dubnyk with four shots.

He went on to save the next 10, and it wasn’t until the 15th shot of the game that one finally slipped past him.

The stagnant Coyotes had only three shots on goal through that first period, but were able to pick things up on the defensive side and held the Flames to only five total second-period shots. Dubnyk had saved 17 to that point, and the Coyotes owed their safety net at least two scores.

And then, just like that, they owed him three.

A wrister by Calgary rookie Johnny Gaudreau got past Dubnyk at 4:07 in the third period, and the Coyotes’ offense just couldn’t muster the momentum to rally as Dubnyk slowly unraveled. Another goal sealed it for Calgary as the ‘Yotes were shut out 3-0.

Prior to Saturday’s loss, opponents average 3.25 goals per game against the Coyotes.

The Coyotes have now gone five straight periods without scoring a goal. Their last goal was in the first period in a 4-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche last Tuesday.

They have also only scored 12 goals in their last six games.

The Flames peppered the goal in the first period with 13 shots as opposed to Arizona’s meager three.

Arizona managed to hold the Flames to only five shots in the second (though one was a goal), and struck 15 of their own.

Calgary picked up their tempo once more in the third period and the Coyotes matched them shot-for-shot at 18, but it just wasn’t enough to overcome the Flames 29 total.

This is the second consecutive game Calgary goaltender Karri Ramo has not allowed a goal.

With his goal against the Coyotes tonight, Flames forward Jiri Hudler has eight points in his last four games.

Arizona falls to 9-12-3 on the season and 6-4-0 against the Pacific conference with the loss.

This is the second consecutive game Arizona has lost to Calgary.
