Jordan Lawlar, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ top prospect, made his return from injury on Sunday for the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles.

Despite being MLB Pipeline’s No. 8 overall prospect, Lawlar has been limited to just 14 games this year due to a string of injuries.

Playing for the Sod Poodles on Sunday, Lawlar struggled at the plate and went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts. The shortstop singled in the fifth inning in the Sod Poodles’ 7-6 loss to the Midland RockHounds.

Why has Jordan Lawlar only played in 14 games this year?

The 22-year-old has played in just 14 games between Triple-A Reno, the Arizona Complex League and Double-A Amarillo this season due to thumb and hamstring injuries.

This season, the shortstop is hitting .315 with a .897 OPS.

His latest injury came when he re-injured his left hamstring running from first to third base in a rehab game in the Arizona Complex League on July 8. After the injury occurred, he was expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks, according to D-backs manager Torey Lovullo.

The sixth-overall pick in 2021 also tore a ligament in his thumb at the end of spring training this year and spent more than two months on the injured list.

He made his return to Triple-A Reno on June 11 and in four games went 8-for-20 with four extra-base hits, playing shortstop and third base. However, he suffered a strained left hamstring on a game-tying triple in the ninth inning of the fourth game.

The shortstop slashed .278/.378/.496 with 20 home runs and 36 stolen bases in the minor leagues last season between Double-A Amarillo and Triple-A.

Lawlar also spent a short time at the major league level in 2023 after veteran shortstop Nick Ahmed was cut, but he struggled at the plate and recorded four hits and 11 strikeouts in the 34 plate appearances he saw over 14 games.
