McCutchen, Pirates overcome D-backs late as bullpen woes continue: By The Numbers

...

On a day when the Arizona Diamondbacks saw their best player, Paul Goldschmidt, hit the 15-day disabled list with a fractured hand, they did the only thing they could to pay tribute.

Move forward.

Playing with a mixture of veterans and minor league call-ups, the D-backs went toe-to-toe with the reigning National League Central champions — albeit for only two-thirds of the game.

Chase Anderson pitched six effective innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out three.

But the rookie right-hander wasn’t a factor in the final outcome.

For the second consecutive evening, that responsibility fell to Arizona’s bullpen. And yet again, it came up on the short end of the stick.

Andrew McCutchen’s broken single off the glove of Andy Marte found its way into the outfield, allowing Josh Harrison to score the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth.

Russell Martin followed with a chopper off the plate that netted two more runs, and the Pirates added three more in the ninth en route to an 8-3 victory.

Here’s a look back at the five-run loss by the numbers:

1.80

In his last four outings, Anderson has a 1.80 ERA — five earned runs allowed in 25 innings. During that span, however, he’s only factored into a decision once (1-0).

2:

Kirk Gibson was tossed for arguing with home plate umpire Ron Kulpa following the conclusion of the second inning.

Gibson wasn’t the only member of the D-backs ejected from the contest. In what appeared to be a clear act of retaliation for the Ernesto Frieri fastball that plunked Goldschmidt Friday, Randall Delgado hit McCutchen square in the back to load the bases in the ninth. He was immediately thrown out.

The pitch sent McCutchen to the ground, and when he got to his feet the reigning NL MVP was none too pleased, slamming his bat against the dirt.

3:

In his first stint at the big league level since 2010, Marte has recorded at least one hit in all three appearances.

4:

Harrison’s solo shot in the third marked his fourth consecutive extra-base hit dating back to the Pirates’ 9-4 win Friday.

5:

Of the nine Arizona players who filled out lineup card for the third game of the three-game set, six were not on the roster when the team kicked off its season in Sydney.

13-of-14:

Ender Inciarte continues to look comfortable in the leadoff spot. With his fifth-inning single, Inciarte reached base for the 13th time in his last 14 games with at least one plate appearance.

15:

Over the last two games, the D-backs have allowed two combined runs in the first through seventh innings. However in the last two frames, Arizona has yielded 15 combined runs.

22:

David Peralta’s phenomenal rookie season continued Saturday. The Venezuelan put together his 22nd multi-hit performance in 50 games, registering three RBI in the process with a single, double and two-run shot.

53.8:

Anderson has thrown a quality start in 53.8 percent of his appearances this season. The native of Wichita Falls, Tex. is eighth among MLB rookies with seven quality starts.

60:

Peralta’s 60 hits are the most by a D-back in his first 50 career games — one more than Gerardo Parra (59).

235:

In defeat, Ziegler made his 235th career appearance with the D-backs — third most in team history by a reliever. Only Jose Valverde (253) and Byung-Hyun Kim (245) have appeared in more games.
