Bruce Arians wants to be a head coach in the National Football League.

The 60-year-old has been an assistant his entire NFL coaching career, with his most recent stops being as offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Arians replaced former Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt as the play caller in Pittsburgh, and filled in for Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano as he was dealing with leukemia.

It's the latter experience that has most directly led to Arians being a top candidate, and he said in a press conference following an interview with the Cardinals Thursday that he believes guiding the Colts to a 9-3 mark this past season not only proved to the rest of the league that he can run a team, but also proved to himself that he could do it.

"It's not as hard as it's supposed to be," Arians said of what he learned.

In truth, Arians said he learned how to delegate -- which was tough for him -- as well as that there is enough time for someone to not only be the head coach, but offensive play caller as well.

So, if he is hired by the Cardinals, expect Arians to call the shots offensively.

"I will have an offensive coordinator but I will call the plays," Arians said. "Until I can find someone who's going to do it better than me.

"I haven't found him yet."

The idea of the head coach calling the plays too may not sound great to some, but Arians wouldn't be the first to do it. In fact, former Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt did it when he first arrived, only ceding the role to Todd Haley late in his first year with the team.

And ultimately, it's Arians' offensive prowess that has the Cardinals interested in his services.

In truth, Arians has learned quite a bit from each of his stops in the NFL. Having coached quarterbacks like Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck, it's apparent he has a knack for handling the position.

That is important for the Cardinals, especially since most believe the team's issues there are directly responsible for the team's struggles.

Arians said the solution will be found via a variety of different avenues, and that if he gets the job he'll look at ways to improve things over the next few months.

Right now it would appear Arians would only need to fix one side of the ball. Because as bad as the Cardinals were on offense, they were just as good on defense.

Led by Ray Horton, who was the defensive coordinator and is now a candidate for the top job, Arizona ranked 12th in the NFL in total defense and third in the NFC for takeaways. In short, little has to change there, though there were reports Wednesday that an Arians hire would lead to a Horton departure.

"I really couldn't comment on staff," Arians said, adding it's too early in the process to make decisions like that. "I know Ray, I've got history with Ray, but all those things would be way down the road."

Indeed they would be, and at the moment Arians is just one of many candidates who the Cardinals are considering. Arizona's opening is the only one left, meaning anyone who does not get the job will end up returning to their current roles.

That's something Arians said wouldn't necessarily be so bad. Because while he has a desire to become a head coach, he said it's important he find a place that's a good fit.

"I have a pretty good job sitting back in Indianapolis, it's not a full-court press for me," he said. "Do I want to be a head coach? Definitely. But just to be one? No."

WE WANT RAY. We don't want another former Steeler OC that insists on calling his own plays. NO. They're GOING to hire him though. I'm convinced. Nothing has changed in their thinking. The promoted Keim, the in-house guy that has been there for 15 years. They will hire Arians, who will fire Ray. They won't draft a QB, but they won't get the best O-lineman either. They'll take the second best after the best gets taken a few picks beofre them, just like they did with Levi Brown.

    No cont
They'll sign another scrap heap QB like they did with Esiason, Kreig, McMahon, Schroeder, King, Anderson, Beuerlein, Blake, and Warner, hoping to duplicate Warner's success. They'll win 4-6 games like they always do. I'm starting to think going to the Super Bowl was the worst thing that could have happened. It convinced the Bidwell's that their philosophy was correct, when it isn't. They just got lucky with Warner.

Who's we? I dont want Horton. He's got as much experience at HC as you do. He cant get a name OC that thrills anybody to come here. How's he qualified? If he's a good leader, whyd his team lose 58-0. Wasnt that his defense? Arians the man! Btw, A true Cards fan knows how to spell B I D W I L L.

    What's wrong with Arians?
What's wrong with a guy who's won Superbowls as an OC and took the worst team in the league to the playoffs this past season?I was hoping Arians would be interviewed as soon as Whiz was fired. I'd be happy with Horton but even happier with Arians as HC and Horton as DC. What's not to like about Arians?

    I agree
that Horton is not the answer for HC. He obviously doesn't have a great staff assembled to help out where he lacks which is offensively.

@diehardcard: Did you really just say
that you'd be upset for them going with the in-house guy for GM but also be upset for them NOT going with the in-house guy for coach? Make up your mind, should they hire in-house guys or not? I don't think this has anything to do with "same old", I think you're just upset that they're not making the choices you want. If they hire Horton, who would you want them to hire at OC to fix the O, and why would that person be better than having Arians? Plus, there's no guarantee that they'll allow Arians to fire Horton. When they Whiz they forced him to keep Pendergast, so there's precedent for that.

I am with you DIEHARDCARDFAN, (WE). You are the first smart fan who has an idea! I like Ray alot BUT Ray cannot bring anyone in as a good OC. We need that! I hope Ray stays but you would think he understands he needs a good offensive staff. The so called FANS out there, please think about what you are saying. Several analysist have said Arians is second best behind McCoy. I actually think he is first. We are getting lucky and I hope the Cards get him! Go Cards!

    I'm pissed
and they haven't even announced anything yet. I have resisted adopted another team besides the Cards, but I just might have to now if Horton leaves. All signs say he's a goner and we're going to have to rebuild the entire team rather than just offense. QB is going to be a tough nut. Kolb will never stay healthy and teams will trade with SF for Alex Smith before he ever gets cut. SF will not trade him here. No worthy QB in the draft. Screwed. Nice job Michael.

Yes I did. And it makes sense
Keim is a front office guy, a former scout. How would you rate the Cards drafts over the last 15 years? A few bright spots, but for the most part it's been dismal, right? So yeah, let's promote a guy that's been involved in all that. Makes total sense, if you're stupid. Ray has only been here 2 years. In those 2 years the Cards have given up 21.8 ppg (2011) and 22.3 ppg (2012). In 2010, the year before Ray got here, they gave up 27.1 ppg. He's a good coach, the defense has improved dramatically under him. Promote him.

Im with dhc I dnt like him already
He's already starting to remind me of Whiz. He's going to hire one of his buddies (probably Bowles) AND he's not going to fire him if he needs to. Why wouldnt you stick with whats successful? Sorry to break your hearts, but if Horton isnt promoted to HC, then we're going to lose him PERIOD. I also find it interesting him and Haley said that they would only leave their current jobs if its "the right fit". Saying to me that they're not going to be HC just to be HC. Gruden and Bevell are both young and just want to be HCs.
