Summertime Sadness: Phoenix Suns fall in Vegas Summer League title game to San Antonio

Just when you thought the Phoenix Suns were through dealing with the San Antonio Spurs this offseason, San Antonio summer league coach Becky Hammon and the “Summer Spurs” were quick to remind you that they weren’t through twisting the dagger.

After luring free agent forward LaMarcus Aldridge to San Antonio and away from the Valley earlier this month, the Spurs capped off July by edging out the Suns 93-90 in the NBA Summer League championship game Monday night in Las Vegas.

It was Phoenix’s second appearance in the Summer League finals in the last three years.

Led by Mike James’ 32 points in 39 minutes of action, the Suns outshot the Spurs percentage-wise from both the field (46% to 40%) and the free throw line (81% to 68%), but San Antonio would gain the advantage in free throws made — converting 26 to Phoenix’s 17 — while committing only 14 turnovers to Phoenix’s 20.

T.J. Warren, Archie Goodwin and Devin Booker would each reach double figures in scoring, chipping in 17, 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Alex Len would lead all rebounders with 13.
