Eliminate the extra points?
It is so simple: move the uprights closer together. We don't need to move them as close as Arena Football does, we don't need to be drastic or overreact but four or five feet would seem to suffice. At least it's a start. AFL kickers average 94 percent on their extra points and although it is only 5 percent lower than the NFL average it would bring a little drama back into the equation.
And it would also make coaches think twice on running their kicker onto the field on fourth and two instead of attempting a 47-yard field goal. Move the uprights in, bring the drama back on extra points and force coaches to embrace fourth-down conversions more often. We have a winner.
And it's such a base solution. My consternation and anxiety in regard to eliminating the extra point in football has been excised.
Thank you, Kevin Guy.
