Timberwolves want Nash to mentor Rubio

It’s open season. Not for hunting, rather for Steve Nash trade rumors.

While many are playing connect the dots and suggesting if Bryan Colangelo pries — or rather simply is handed — Mike D’Antoni from the Knicks and brings him to Toronto that his former point guard may not be far behind.

On the surface it makes sense. Nash gets to reunite with D’Antoni, running his seven seconds or less system for fans in his adopted home of Canada. The fact that the Raptors are further away from a championship than the Suns makes it seem like a move that is unlikely to happen.

Speaking of moves that seem unlikely, try this one on for size. Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld.com is reporting via Twitter that the Minnesota Timberwolves are very interested in acquiring the services of the two-time MVP and are willing to make the deal worth the Suns’ while.

If Phoenix decides to move Steve Nash, it sounds like Minnesota would love to have him to mentor Ricky Rubio.less than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Minnesota would put together a nice package for him. Like most teams this time of year, the Wolves are fishing. Obviously, it’s a long shot.less than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Nash relegated to being a mentor for a young point guard on the team that finished as the worst in the NBA? We just can’t see it happening.

If the Suns front office is hesitant to deal Nash out of a sense of loyalty it’s hard to believe they’d send him to a team that wouldn’t help his career progress in the least. Sending him to Minnesota would be the NBA equivalent of putting him out to pasture, and after the way he played last season he still seems far from deserving the Mike Bibby treatment.
