The Tucson Roadrunners have filled their head coach vacancy.

Jay Varady has agreed to a multi-year contract to serve as head coach after previous head coach Mike Van Ryn resigned to join the St. Louis Blues coaching staff.

The 40-year-old Varady most recently coached the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League to a 36-23-6-3 record.

“After an extensive search, we are very pleased to select Jay as our new head coach of the Roadrunners,” Coyotes assistant general manager Steve Sullivan said in a statement. “Jay is an excellent coach, teacher and a proven winner. We are confident that he is the right coach to continue forming the culture that we are creating with the team. He will be a great leader when and will continue to develop our prospects in Tucson.”

Varady will be the Roadrunners’ third coach in as many seasons.

“It’s an honor named the head coach of the Tucson Roadrunners,” Varady said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to developing the Coyotes prospects while building on the team foundation that was established in Tucson last season.”

The Roadrunners won the AHL’s pacific division a season ago before losing to the Texas Stars in the Calder Cup playoffs.
