The New York Giants on Wednesday signed fullback Elijhaa Penny off the Arizona Cardinals practice squad.
Although he hasn’t played a down with the team in 2018, the second-year back out of Idaho made the most of his opportunities last season.
In 16 games played, he ran the rock 31 times for 124 yards, averaging 4.0 yards a carry, and two touchdowns. Penny, who converted to fullback for this season, also caught four passes for 38 yards.
In addition to Penny’s departure, the Cardinals released defensive tackle Garrison Smith on Tuesday.
The team also cut practice squad linebacker B.J. Bello, signing linebacker Nigel Harris to fill the spot.
On Wednesday, wide receiver Kendall Wright will be in Arizona for a planned workout, according to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s John Gambadoro, while the team is also expected to sign linebacker Joe Walker from the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad.
Penny will head to a New York team that struggled mightily on offense Sunday night.
Quarterback Eli Manning was sacked a total of six times as the offensive line couldn’t win the battle in the trenches. Rookie running back Saquon Barkley also had a poor showing, rushing for just 28 yards on 11 carries.
The Cardinals released Penny upon the 53-man roster cuts before the season and retained fullback Derrick Coleman.
