Tucson’s Indoor Football League opponents will be forced to experience the Day of the Dead weekly.

The team announced it would be called the Sugar Skulls, paying homage to Dia de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) and Tucson’s annual All Souls Procession weekend ceremony.

“We believe Sugar Skulls captures the identity of our community and the people who live here,” said Cathy Guy, a primary team owner with her husband, Kevin Guy. “As important as its connection to the city is that the name is unique in professional sports and will forever be linked to Tucson.”

More than 1,000 local fans entered a contest to name the the team after it was launched. Sahuarita’s Leah Rhey won the contest and will be prized two season tickets.

The Sugar Skulls will start the 2019 season at the Tucson Convention Center Arena, also home of the Arizona Coyotes affiliate, the Roadrunners.

Cathy and Kevin Guy, who won three ArenaBowl championships as the Arizona Rattlers general manager and head coach, are the primary owners of the team.

Former defensive coordinator of the Iowa Barnstomers Marcus Coleman was named the first-ever head coach of the Sugar Skulls.

Coleman, 44, won the 2018 United Bowl Championship with Iowa before his move to Tucson’s new expansion team. He played 11 years in the NFL and Texas Tech as a defensive back prior to his coaching career in the IFL.

The Sugar Skulls will begin its first season in March. Fans can purchase season tickets now with a $50 deposit per account by visiting the team’s website.
