Wainwright tosses one-hit gem, Cardinals throttle D-backs: By The Numbers

May 21, 2014, 3:37 AM | Updated: 3:37 am

Bronson Arroyo’s hot streak on the mound was bound to come to an end at some point.

That it came Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals — 8-16 record with a 4.64 ERA — should come as no surprise.

Despite heading into the road contest with a league-leading ERA (0.39) in May among qualified starters, Arroyo labored through his seven innings of work, allowing five earned runs on nine hits.

Arroyo served up his eighth and ninth long balls of the season to Matt Adams and Jhonny Peralta, and St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright took care of the rest on the bump.

The two-time All-Star tossed a one-hit shutout, as the Cardinals opened the three-game set with a 5-0 rout of the D-backs.

Here’s a look back at the five-run loss by the numbers:

0-for-3

D-backs third baseman Martin Prado left Sunday’s game due to blurred vision in his left eye, however he was back in the lineup at Busch Stadium.

Despite coming in with at least one hit in six of his last eight games, Prado finished the evening 0-for-3 with three groundouts.

1:

Arizona’s lone hit marked its lowest total of the 2014 campaign. The D-backs were last held to a single base knock on Sept. 6, 2013 in San Francisco.

3:

D-backs second baseman Aaron Hill missed his third consecutive game due to a shoulder injury.

5:

Only five pitchers in baseball have multiple shutouts in 2014: Henderson Alvarez, Johnny Cueto, Julio Teheran, Martin Perez and Wainwright.

6:

Wainwright struck out a season-high nine batters in the win. Of those nine, a career-high six came without a swing on two strikes.

7:

Of the nine hits Arroyo gave up, seven went for extra-base hits — 77.7 percent.

8:

The shutout was the eighth of Wainwright’s career, and the first of the one-hit variety.

14-for-16:

Heading into the National League affair, Gerardo Parra had collected one hit in 14 of his last 15 games. Tuesday, he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

19:

Not surprisingly, Paul Goldschmidt had Arizona’s single hit with a two-out double in the fourth. With the two-bagger, Goldschmidt took over the league-lead in that category with 19.

400:

Arroyo made his 400th career regular-season appearance Tuesday. Of those 400, a career-high 39 have come against St. Louis.
