D-backs flattened by Astros: By The Numbers

...

It has become easy over the last several years to write off the Houston Astros as an inferior opponent.

Dallas Keuchel resents that sentiment.

The 26-year-old left-hander’s season took another big step Wednesday, when Keuchel improved to 8-3 on the year, thanks in part to a 2.38 ERA. His walks-plus-hits-per-inning-pitched (WHIP) is down to 0.99.

Keuchel went 8.0 innings strong against the Arizona Diamondbacks, holding them to just one run on four hits and a walk.

That was fitting for Brandon McCarthy’s fate, as the Diamondbacks right-hander once again lacked run support, though giving up five runs to his opponent, en route to his major league-most ninth loss of the season.

Here’s a look at the loss by the numbers:

.091

Diamondbacks designated hitter Nick Evans has just one hit in 11 at-bats with the Diamondbacks this season, hitting .091 on the season after going 0-for-3 Wednesday. Evans’ lone hit of the year was a home run.

McCarthy is now 1-9 on the year. He has taken the most losses in baseball, with only a handful of other pitchers in the majors having seven losses. His 5.29 ERA is the worst mark in the Diamondbacks’ starting rotation.

2.0

Since being recalled from Triple-A Reno on Sunday, Diamondbacks pitcher Will Harris has tossed two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one. He faced the Astros in both of his outings.

2.50

McCarthy now has the worst run support in baseball, along with former Arizona pitcher Ian Kennedy, averaging just 2.50 runs of support per start. The Diamondbakcs have scored one, two and zero runs in his last three starts, respectively. They have scored two runs or less in nine of McCarthy’s 14 starts this seasons, including three games in which they were shut out by their opponent.

3

The Diamondbacks’ three-game road winning streak came to an end Wednesday in Houston. They are now 17-15 on the road for the year, while logging baseball’s fewest wins at home, with just 12.

5

Astros’ slugger Chris Carter logged the fifth multi-homer game of his career Wednesday, hitting two solo home runs off of McCarthy. It was Carter’s second such game of the season.

15

In 15 at-bats this season, Diamondbacks designated hitters are 2-for-15 (.133) with one RBI.

23

The Diamondbacks’ streak of 23 straight games with a double came to an end Wednesday, when they managed just four hits and a walk off of Dallas Keuchel and the Astros.
