Cardinals place employees on furlough

May 20, 2011, 3:44 PM | Updated: 5:54 pm

It is becoming all to common place around the NFL. Teams having to place employees on furlough due to the lockout. The New York Jets have already done it. So have the Miami Dolphins.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, you can add the Arizona Cardinals to the list.

One of the most far-reaching effects of the lockout will be felt next week in Arizona.
Starting at 12:01 a.m. local time Sunday, non-contract Cardinals employees will be on forced furlough for one week, according to a league source.

None will be permitted in the team’s training facility, nor will anybody be allowed to check email.

While many will be quick to repeat the tired line ‘the Cardinals are cheap’, it seems the more appropriate response would be anger with the league and players association.

In the end it boils down to these everyday people on the team’s staff making modest salaries being forced to unpaid for a week while the players and league argue over how to split $9 billion.

The Cardinals aren’t the first team and they probably won’t be the last forced to make these moves. That is, if the lockout doesn’t come to an end in the near future.
