Cardinals’ linebacker Markus Golden on Dr. Jen Welter: ‘She’s a real good coach’

The Arizona Cardinals made NFL history when they hired Dr. Jen Welter as the first female coach last week.

Welter will spend the entire training camp and preseason coaching the inside linebackers as part of the Cardinals internship program.

Bruce Arians decision to bring over Welter to his coaching staff seems to be paying huge dividends just four days into camp.

Rookie linebacker Markus Golden was on the Burns & Gambo show on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Tuesday and talked about what Welter brings to the table as a coach.

“She is pretty good and knows a lot about football,” he said. “More than people would think she knows. She’s a real good coach and know a lot about pass rush and a whole lot about linebacker so she is doing a good job.”

Golden was the Cardinals second round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and is battling for a starter’s spot at the linebacker position.

The University of Missouri product racked up 16.5 sacks over the last two seasons and brings a high-motor to the football team. Another talent that Golden brings is his willingness to get better, regardless of the gender of the person that is coaching him.

“It is really about the pass rush,” Golden said on what Welter has taught him on the field. “There was one pass rush where I got in there and I had beat him off the line, but I slowed down and let him catch up.

“She was basically saying use the rip and I would have been able to get back there and make the play. I watched it on film and if I would have used the rip I wold have got the sack.”

Great coaching such as what Golden noted has given quickly given Welter respect from the team.

“Yes of course it do,” Golden said on the respect Welter receives. “I’m the type of guy that when coach got here, I knew she was pretty good so I respected her from the jump. Just because she is a female doesn’t mean she can’t come here and coach us guys up.”
