Since 1992, the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League have called US Airways Center (formerly America West Arena) home.
But according to a report from Craig Morgan of Foxsports.com, the building that houses the franchise’s four ArenaBowl banners has seen its last Rattlers home game.
The two-time defending ArenaBowl champion Arizona Rattlers will move to newly minted Gila River Arena in Glendale next season, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed to FOX Sports Arizona.
The Rattlers wrapped up their fourth consecutive National Conference championship last Sunday at US Airways Center, and will play the Cleveland Gladiators in ArenaBowl 27 on Aug. 23. Morgan reported a formal announcement on the move should come following that game.
The franchise averaged over 13,000 fans at the arena nicknamed “the Snake Pit” in 12 different seasons from 1992 to 2004. Labor issues canceled the 2009 AFL season, and following the rebirth of the league, the Rattlers have averaged over 10,000 fans only once (2010).
In 11 home games in 2014, an average of 9,335 fans attended Rattlers games.
