Arizona Cardinals running back Andre Ellington will be placed on injured reserve with a hernia, ending his season, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Ellington has battled various injuries throughout the 2014 season, yet still rushed for 660 yards and caught 46 balls for 395 yards in 12 games. Coming into Sunday’s game, Ellington was tied for the team lead in receptions.

What was originally thought to be a severe hip pointer, was actually a hernia. The 25-year-old will travel to Philadelphia on Monday to have his hernia surgically repaired.

The journey from sixth round pick to NFL starter was a quick one for No. 38, as he quickly became the team’s spark plug behind Rashard Mendenhall in 2013.

Expected to carry the load in 2014 despite his 5-foot-9, 199-pound frame, Ellington fought through injury until one finally got to him.

Ellington has played 27 games in his Cardinals career, combining for 2,078 yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns. He was replaced on Sunday by Kerwynn Williams, who rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries against the Kansas City Chiefs.
