Arizona State’s 19-16 overtime win over Utah on Saturday was enough to convince the College Football Playoff committee to bump the Sun Devils into the top 10 in their latest rankings, which were released Tuesday.
The 7-1 Devils lead the Pac-12 South heading into Saturday’s showdown with No. 10 Notre Dame.
Only Oregon (4th) is ranked ahead of ASU among Pac-12 teams.
Mississippi State tops the poll, followed by Florida State, Auburn and Oregon.
For the first time ever, there will be a four-team playoff to determine college football’s national champion. The rankings are determined by a 12-member committee comprised of athletic directors (Jeff Long, Barry Alvarez, Pat Haden, Oliver Luck and Dan Radakovich), former coaches (Tyrone Willingham and Tom Osborne), a former conference commissioner (Mike Tranghese), a former reporter (Steve Weiberg) and other heads of state and administrators (Michael C. Gould, Tom Jernstedt and Condoleezza Rice).
