LISTEN: Derrick Hall, Diamondbacks president and CEO

Arizona Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall said much like an iPhone, the club’s original stadium food will keep  getting better every year.

Appearing on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM’s Doug & Wolf, Hall talked about the team’s new and improved Churro Dog, which was unveiled Wednesday. The original dog was a cinnamon churro in a long john donut topped with yogurt, caramel and chocolate sauce.

“It did very well,” Hall said of the Churro Dog, which was introduced in 2015. “The 2.0 just takes it to a whole new level with other toppings. Crushed Oreo and strawberry toppings, it’s had great reviews. I haven’t had one.”

The D-backs’ outlandish culinary choices have been a hit, with Churro Dog being named the best donut-based ballpark food by MLB.com.

The Churro Dog is not the first time the D-backs have put a spin on the classic hot dog. It has predecessors in D-bat Dog and Cheeseburger Dog.

Just two days prior to the unveiling of the new Churro Dog, the D-backs unveiled a bacon-wrapped pretzel baguette for the coming season.

“Holy cow, it is huge,” Hall said. “Inside it’s black forest ham and swiss and honey. The first bite everybody takes, the salty sweet, the look on their face is just this joy. They can’t stop eating it and licking their fingers.”

The new creations come from the mind of Stephen Tilder, the executive chef for Levy Restaurants at Chase Field. Hall has given him room to experiment.

“Each year we’re looking for that wow item,” Hall said. “I think it’s going to be a big hit.”
