The Diamondbacks placed center fielder A.J. Pollock on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right groin and selected the contract of Triple-A Reno center fielder Reymond Fuentes, the team confirmed Monday.

To make room for Fuentes on the 40-man roster, the D-backs designated reliever Enrique Burgos for assignment.

98.7 FM, Arizona Sports Station’s John Gambadoro was first to report Pollock’s move to the disabled list.

Pollock suffered the injury in Sunday’s extra-inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After singling to right field, he was visibly in pain running to first and was pulled from the game.

“Got some good news today. It’s kind of a mild, grade 1 strain. Less than last year (when Pollock had a left groin strain), which is nice,” Pollock said on Monday after being evaluated.

Pollock will head to the DL the owner of a .299 average with two home runs, 11 RBI and 11 stolen bases. An All-Star in 2015, he played in just 12 games last season after suffering an elbow injury and then, toward the end of the season, a left groin ailment.

“It doesn’t hurt as much as it did last year,” he said Monday. “Not as severe. I don’t really have any ideas (on a return timeline). I’m going to go after this thing, and the trainers are really positive and so am I.”

Pollock had trouble with his left groin during spring training, with the issue causing him to miss some time.

Fuentes will start for Arizona in center field and lead off in the order as it opens a series against the New York Mets on Monday.

The 26-year-old is batting .471 for Triple-A over the past 21 games. He has batted .376 for the year, fourth-best in the Pacific Coast League.

“He is a center fielder by trade and that’s why he’s here,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “He was having a tremendous offensive year in Reno.”
