David Peralta helps high school team celebrate first ever baseball title

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta was part of a pregame ceremony at Chase Field on Tuesday night. But it had nothing to do with the matchup against the Atlanta Braves. Instead, he was in the First Base Lounge of the Diamond Suite to present championship rings to Raymond S. Kellis High School’s baseball team for its 5A state title.

Peralta worked with the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation to cover the cost of the championship rings, then offered some words of encouragement before handing them out to members of the team.

“You guys were like the underdogs, and I was the same way,” Peralta said. “I had to put in hard work, dedication and a lot of time to be where I am right now. And when I heard your story, I was like ‘wow, that’s unbelievable’. So I want to congratulate you guys for all the hard work you put in, and the parents put all the hard work in too. And I just want to share this ring with you guys. Congratulations and keep doing what you’re doing.”

In return, Peralta was presented with a Kellis baseball shirt, which he wore during the presentation, and a batting helmet that was signed by all the high school players.

Kellis was founded in 2004 and, while the school has now won four state titles across all the sports, this is the school’s first baseball championship.
