D-backs’ J.D. Martinez hits his ninth homer in as many games

The sky is blue, the earth is round and you’re still breathing. Also, J.D. Martinez continues hitting dingers.

The Arizona Diamondbacks slugger smashed his ninth of the last nine games in the second inning Tuesday night against Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Jon Gray.

The ball came off the bat with an exit velocity of 114 mph, the fastest in MLB since Nelson Cruz hit a 114-mph homer three days prior. It helped that the pitch entered the strike zone zipping along at 96 mph.

Knocking off the left-center wall above the concourse, Martinez’s solo shot that put the D-backs ahead 1-0 registered as a 447-foot homer.

Martinez was named the National League Player of the Week for the period spanning last Monday to Sunday.

Of course, his recent run of success is bolstered by his four-dinger performance Sept. 4 while visiting the Los Angeles Dodgers. Nonetheless, he’s remained busy, having a multi-hit streak of three games heading into the Tuesday game at Chase Field.
