Iowa guard misses free throw as tribute to late record-holder

Feb 25, 2018, 10:09 PM | Updated: 10:16 pm

With a chance to break the Iowa record for most consecutive free throw makes in school history, point guard Jordan Bohannon didn’t.

And he didn’t want to.

The sophomore guard had just knocked down his 34th free throw in a row, tying former Hawkeye Chris Street’s record. Then, purposefully, he short-armed a shot that with 2:15 left in the game would’ve given Iowa an eight-point lead over Northwestern on Sunday.

Street, you see, never took an attempt to build on his streak. A car accident killed the Iowa-born forward in January of 1993, robbing him of that chance to increase his record. So Bohannon, to honor Street, ended his own chance to claim the record for himself.

“That’s not my record to have,” Bohannon told the Big Ten Network afterward. “That record deserves to stay in his name.

“I’ve been really close with his family these past couple of years. It’s really got me emotional the past couple of games because I knew what I wanted to do.”

Bohannon then shared a teary moment with Street’s parents after the game.

“Christopher would want him to do to the best he could do and stay after it. But that was Jordan’s decision, and if that’s what he wanted to do, then we appreciate it,” Street’s father Mike said, according to NorthJersey.com. “We certainly in the future want him to get another shot at it.

“I told him, ‘Next time, you need to go right on by.’ “
