The road back for Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray continued on Tuesday, as he made his second rehab start in Reno with the Triple-A Aces.

Ray picked up the loss, but it was not due to a poor performance. He allowed one run over 4.1 innings, giving up four baserunners (three hits and one walk) and picking up a strikeout for nine of his 13 outs. Ray threw 66 pitches, 48 of them for strikes.

“Been doing everything that we had hoped,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station’s Burns & Gambo. “He had been saying that he was feeling good and I’ve learned to trust Robbie since the situation last year, being hit on the head. He told me exactly how he was feeling, exactly how he would go out and perform and he backed it up.”

Lovullo said the team has been encouraged by Ray’s outings but will be cautious because if the lefty has a misstep in the process, he could miss more significant chunks of the season.

In his first rehab start on Thursday, Ray totaled 46 pitches in 2.1 innings for Single A Advanced Visalia.

Ray and teammate Shelby Miller have both been making their way back from injuries. Ray has a strained right oblique while Miller has been continuing to make rehab starts after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year.
