After being suspended from all team-related activities in the spring and summer, Arizona sophomore defensive back Scottie Young Jr. will rejoin the team and be suspended for the team’s opener against BYU, the school announced Friday night.

Young was arrested in September of 2017 on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

While he was in a residence hall, a witness saw Young push, spit on and threaten his girlfriend. Per the Arizona Daily Star, Young told police his reasoning for doing so was because he thought his girlfriend was going to hit him. Young’s girlfriend told police this was not the first time Young had put his hands on her.

Young’s next court date is on Nov. 2, per the Arizona Daily Star.

Young was allowed to participate with the team under then-head coach Rich Rodriguez. He continued to start for the team, playing in nine games at safety and missing the other three due to a knee injury. He also played in the team’s bowl game, recording five tackles against Purdue.

The school said Friday in a statement that Young was investigated by the Dean of Students for student code of conduct violations related to the incident. Per the university, Young completed disciplinary sanctions from the school and other penalties from the athletic department.
